چکیده
This paper proposes an accuracy improvement of the method of multiple scales MMSs for nonlinear vibration analyses of continuous systems with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. As an example, we treat a shallow suspended cable subjected to a harmonic excitation, and investigate the primary resonance of themth in-plane mode Ω ≈ ωm in whichΩ and ωm are the driving and natural frequencies, respectively. The application of Galerkin’s procedure to the equation of motion yields nonlinear ordinary differential equations with quadratic and cubic nonlinear terms. The steady-state responses are obtained by using the discretization approach of the MMS in which the definition of the detuning parameter, expressing the relationship between the natural frequency and the driving frequency, is changed in an attempt to improve the accuracy of the solutions. The validity of the solutions is discussed by comparing them with solutions of the direct approach of the MMS and the finite difference method.

In this study, the method of multiple scales is used to perform a nonlinear vibration analysis of a mechanical system in two cases; with dry and lubricated clearance joints. In the dry contact case, the Lankarani-Nikravesh model is used to represent the contact force between the joined bodies. The surface elasticity is modeled as a nonlinear spring-damper element. Primary resonance is discussed...
متن کاملSystem identification of a beam with frictional contact
The nonlinear system becomes an area with numerous investigations over the past decades. The conventional modal analysis could not be applied on nonlinear continuous system which makes it impossible to construct the reduced order models and obtain system response based on limited number of measurement points. Nonlinear normal modes provide a useful tool for extending modal analysis to nonlinea...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Coupled Nonlinear Vibration of a Two-Mass System
This paper presents a fixed-end two-mass system (TMS) with end constraints that permits uncoupled solutions for different masses. The coupled nonlinear models for the present fixed-end TMS were solved using the continuous piecewise linearization method (CPLM) and detailed investigation on the effect of mass-ratio on the TMS response was conducted. The investigations showed that increased mass-r...
